After visiting the awesome Spring edition of Barryfornia in May, I took the scenic route back and ended up travelling through the small village of Peterstone-Super-Ely, where I was greeted by this wonderful garage and its vintage petroliana artefacts.
With its enamel signs, and original petrol pumps still on display, this garage gives a great insight into automotive garages from times past. Brands on display include Castrol, Duckhams, British Petroleum and Shell among many more, it’s a great place to visit, for anyone interested in seeing how garages used to look in the UK.
Like the Old Pioneer Garage in West Wales I documented in a previous blog post last year, it’s great to document and capture some photographs of these amenities whilst we still can.
In its heyday this garage would have been was a hub of activity with motorists from a bygone era bringing their daily drives in for work or to fill up with petrol.
As always the subject matter on display here is something I love to photograph and find fascinating. The early Duckhams Oils thermometer and retail sign still hanging on the side of the garage wall framing some nice enamel signs on the main front side of the building. I also love the patina on display on some of the pumps and especially on the Closed for Lunch yellow sign with its rusted hand written type.
A nice mix of interesting details and wonderful patina on display on some of the vintage signs and pumps give me a great feeling as a photographer, and takes me back to a time as a teenager when I worked at my Dad’s car and van hire business in the docks area of Newport. As well as exploring old scrapyards and garages through the medium of film photography during my university design degree course.
Again this series of images were captured using my full frame Canon EOS R6. I paired it with the RF 50mm 1.8 STM lens for this shoot which allowed for a nice field of view and use of Bokeh .
I hope you enjoy this set of images that were taken back in May 2022 on a fleeting visit through the intriguing village of Peterstone-Super-Ely.
I’ll look forward to finding more vintage garages to photograph in the future.
