Cardiff Shooters Portrait event at the Wales & West Photography Show, ICC Wales

One of a set of images of model Amy Tatham photographed at the Wales & West Photography Show, ICC Wales. Newport.

During my first visit to the Wales & West Photography Show at the ICC Wales back in July, I met up with the team from Cardiff Shooters to join in on an organised portrait shoot at the venue.

I’ve followed Cardiff Shooters on social media for a while now, and it’s always great to see the quality of images that come from their themed photoshoots and photowalks. I’ve been unable to get to an event before now, but it was great to finally meet up with the team who were in the middle of their photoshoot, and using the underground car park as an awesome backdrop for their portraits as captured in these images.

The models were given dynamic colour and lighting treatment via some Rotolight Neo 3 and AEOS 2 LED lights, with Cardiff Shooters and Rotolight ambassador Neil Pesticcio “Mister P” heading up the shoot. It was great to experience the atmosphere and creativity on display from all the photographers and models attending.

I managed to capture some photo’s of three different models in the car park and another model on the Rotolight trade stand. (I’ll put their instagram links below). It was great to capture some quick portraits of each of them and it allowed me to reignite my passion for portrait photography with the intension of adding more portraiture to my portfolio in the near future.

The addition of the Rotolight LED lighting made a massive difference being used on location, enabling this normally dark car park area to be transformed with these easy to use and extremely portable lights. They are definitely worth the hype that they have been given since their launch earlier this year, and I will definitely be considering getting some in the near future.

I decided to edit my shots to have a mix of both colour and black and white shots which both work well with the industrial location as their backdrop.

It was also a good learning curve to work alongside a number of talented photographers at the event, which meant I had to capture my shots quickly and pick my moments to try and capture something slightly different.

All photographs on the day were taken on my Canon R6 paired with a Canon 50mm STM lens. I used a prime lens which made me consider my position and composition more by having a fixed focal length, and although a bit of a challenge at times, due to the number of people there, I felt I achieved some decent images for my first outing which I will look to build on at the next Cardiff Shooters event I can get to. It also performed well for a relatively lower priced RF lens having the ability to stop down to F1.8 allowing for low light shooting.

A big thank you to event orgnaniser Neil, the models and other photographers that were there, it was great to speak to you all. Definitely check out the Cardiff Shooters website and their socials for updates of some great photography and forthcoming events.

I hope you enjoy these photo’s and any feedback is always greatly appreciated.
